Whether it’s your first time getting orthodontic treatment or you’re having an adjustment, it’s a good idea to “brace” yourself for any discomfort.
Some patients have no issue with getting braces. But that may not be true for you.
Get rid of pain and keep your smile moving smoothly with these tips for Marietta braces patients.
- Take Medication Before Your Appointment
-
Make your visit a comfortable one by taking an over the counter pain reliever before the discomfort can start. Don’t get into the habit of taking a couple pills before every visit, however; that’s not safe. Talk with your doctor about a painkiller dose and frequency that’s right for you.
- Try a Topical Gel
-
Oral over-the-counter anesthetics work wonders for instantly soothing discomfort. A brand like Anbesol or Orajel is great for canker sores and toothaches, but they’re also good for braces. Apply a dab of the product to aching gums, especially over tooth roots.
Apply a little to areas on your cheeks where wires poke out.
- Chill Out!
-
That’s not to say we’re telling you to suck it up and stop complaining about the pain!
Rather, you should find a way to literally chill your mouth.
An icepack on the outside of your cheek, ice water, or a popsicle on the inside can instantly dull pain from braces. Treat yourself to some ice cream after an orthodontic adjustment! Just remember to rinse well with water and brush afterwards.
There are other ways to get relief from uncomfortable braces. And yes, the pain is temporary and worth that gorgeous smile you’ll have in the end!
