If you’re dealing with an orthodontic problem during COVID-19 dental office closures, take a deep breath. Even though we’re practicing “social distancing” during the coronavirus pandemic, our Marietta orthodontist is still here to provide urgent care services and emergency appointments.
That being said, most orthodontic emergencies are issues that you can address at home without having to rush off to see the orthodontist. Depending on what the problem is, we can talk you through what to do or schedule you for an appointment once social distancing restrictions are lifted. But if it’s a true emergency that requires immediate attention, we can meet you at our office the same day!
Here are some of the most common orthodontic problems that we get called about:
A broken-off bracket: If the bracket is floating in place, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Depending on how it’s attached, you might be able to remove it.
A wire poking into your gums or cheek: If possible, reposition the wire back into the correct location. If that’s not an option, the wire can be trimmed with nail clippers and covered with wax, or bent with the eraser-end of a pencil to minimize irritation.
The wire coming out of your bracket: Try to slide the wire back into your brackets, just under the rubber bands or ligatures.
A broken aligner or retainer: Although it’s less than ideal, we’ll likely wait to see you until after the pandemic passes to repair or replace your appliance. However, we may be able to arrange having you drop it off for a repair and you’ll be able to pick it up later.
